Race.

In 2006, African Americans made up 29 percent of the population while non-Hispanic whites made up 69 percent. American Indians made up 0.3 percent, Asians 0.2 percent, and Hispanics or Latinos made up American Indians made up 0.3 percent, Asians 0.2 percent, those of two or more races 1 percent, of the population. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 1.3 percent of the population.

Education. In 2000, 61 percent of District 5 residents aged 25 years or more graduated from high school compared to the state average of 75 percent and the national average of 80 percent.

Bachelor's Degree. 11 percent of District 5 residents aged 25 years or more held a bachelor’s degree in 2000, compared to the state average of 19 percent and the national average of 24 percent.

Income. The average household income for District 5 in 2004 was $25,785 , compared with the state average of $35,216, and the national average of $44,334.

Poverty. 24 percent, or almost one in four District 5 residents, lived in poverty in 2004.

Additional Demographic Information. The 2006 population estimate for the 5th Judicial District is 52,741. The District lost 4 percent of its population betweeen 2000 and 2006. Fewer residetns in the 5th district were foreign born or spoke a language other than English at home compared to the state averages. The district is mostly rural, with an average of 35 people per square mile.
