Race. In 2006, whites made up 60 percent of the population, while 26 percent were African Americans. 8 percent of the area population was Hispanic or Latino, 4 percent was Asian, 1 percent was American Indian and 1 percent reported belonging to two or more racial categories.


Education. 79 percent of 24th District residents aged 25 years or older had completed high school in 2000. This figure is 4 percent higher than the statewide average and one percentage point lower than the nationwide average.

 


Bachelor's Degree.  22 percent of area residents aged 25 years or more held a bachelor’s degree in the year 2000, compared to 19 percent statewide and 24 percent across the U.S.

Income. In 1999, the per capita income for the 24th Judicial District was $19,953, higher than the state average of $16,912 but lower than the national average of $21,587. In 2004, the average household income for the 24th District was $38,324, compared to a state average of $35,216, and a national average of $44,334.

 


Poverty.  In 2004, 17 percent of residents in District 24 lived below the poverty line, while 19 percent of residents statewide and 13 percent of residents nationwide lived in poverty.

 

Additional Demographic Information. In 2006, the total population estimate for the 24th Judicial District was 431,361, representing a five percent decline over 2000 figures. 8 percent of area residents were born outside of the United States, and 13 percent of area residents spoke a language other than English at home. The area is mostly urban, with an average of 1,383 people per square mile.
